A neighbor of ours had an estate sale last spring and I could not stop thinking about it.

He had died in the fall. Nice man.

The family put everything on tables in the driveway and people walked through it on a Saturday morning with coffee.

What got me was the tools. He had a garage that was clearly the pride of his life. Everything hung on a pegboard with the outline drawn around it so you knew where it went back. You could tell that garage took him thirty years.

It went for a few hundred dollars in about two hours.

I am not telling this to be grim. He had a good life and his kids were kind about the whole thing, and somebody got a genuinely excellent table saw.

But I drove past that driveway and went home and looked at my own garage differently, and I have thought about it maybe once a week since.

Here is where I landed. The stuff is not the point and it was never going to be the point. But the thirty years of Saturdays out there, with the radio on, doing the thing he liked doing, those were completely real and nobody sold those for four hundred dollars on a Saturday.

Spend the money on the Saturdays. The pegboard is just where the Saturdays happened to live.
