Did 1,000 men really drink punch out of their hats in Riverside back in 1834? 🎩🍋
On June 7, 1834, a massive crowd gathered near the Des Plaines River crossing to elect Cook County’s very first militia colonel, John Baptiste Beaubien. Legend says that to celebrate, they dammed up a natural freshwater spring, dumped in a keg of brandy, sugar, and 16 dozen lemons, and drank straight from the ground using their hats!
While historians debate if the rowdy punch bowl actually happened, the name permanently stuck: Bourbon Spring.

Did you know Riverside’s iconic public library was almost never built? 📚
Back in June 1929, local residents held a special bond referendum to fund a dedicated library building. The measure passed by a single vote. Just four months later, the 1929 stock market crash triggered the Great Depression. Had just one voter stayed home or voted “no,” funding would have frozen, and this architectural gem likely wouldn’t exist today!
Despite the economic collapse, construction moved forward, and on April 4, 1931, the Riverside Public Library officially opened. It was an instant community triumph- issuing over 1,800 library cards in its very first week!
Designed in the striking Tudor Revival style, the building features native limestone, a hand-carved tile roof, six protective grotesque carvings, and vaulted, church-like timber ceilings. Tucked right along the Des Plaines River, its quiet reading room remains one of the most serene spots in the western suburbs.
Preserving historic landmarks like this is what gives Riverside, IL its timeless character, rich community spirit, and exceptionally strong property values.
