Living in the country and selling multiple acreages, I take it a bit for granted that people know this. Did you know before reading this?
I HAD NO IDEA THAT THEREâS ACTUALLY A SYSTEM TO RURAL ADDRESSES
Ever notice how rural addresses seem oddly specific? Like:
đ39097 Road 712
That number isnât random, itâs designed to help pinpoint exactly where a property sits along the county road grid, even without GPS or cell service.
Hereâs how it works using this address as an example:
⢠390 = the nearest crossroad or mile line
Youâre near Road 390.
⢠97 = the distance from that road
In this case, the driveway is about 0.97 miles from Road 390.
⢠Odd vs. Even Numbers
- Odd numbers are typically on the north or east side of the road
- Even numbers are on the south or west side
So if emergency responders, delivery drivers, utility crews, or even country cruisers need to find a location, the address itself helps guide them.
Many rural counties use some version of the âCulver Address System,â developed in the 1950s to replace vague rural route addresses that made it difficult for ambulances and fire crews to find people quickly.
Once you understand the numbering system, rural addresses suddenly make a lot more sense.
