Got to hang and have a great conversation with some cool dudes behind a throwback record shop in Normal Heights called Soul Side Vinyl 🎶
On this week’s Livin’ in San Diego Podcast, we sat down with Rex and Mark, also known as DJ Syko, at their spot on Adams Ave and heard the full story behind the shop. Rex shared the wild chain of events that took him from military life to owning a record store, all starting with a random Facebook Marketplace search. Mark talked about getting his first set of turntables, learning to DJ, and how that turned into years deep in the DJ scene and vinyl culture.
This place is about way more than just records.
They are working hard to make Soul Side a true neighborhood hang, a cultural space and an alternative to the typical bar scene. They are planning live shows, community nights, game nights, and creative events that bring people together around music and art. They even have legends like DJ Qbert coming through soon, with more events and fun in the works.
At the core, they are focused on building and preserving a culture of connection that comes from the hip hop roots they love, creating a space where all ages can come through, vibe out, and feel part of something.
If you are into vinyl, hip hop, or just like seeing locals build cool community spots in San Diego, this episode is a good one.
