Laguna Beach

A striking example of 1930s Modernism has come to market in Laguna Beach for $7.5 million. Known as the Hangover House, the concrete-and-steel residence was designed by architect William Levy Alexander and completed in 1937 for famed travel writer and adventurer Richard Halliburton, who disappeared two years later while attempting to sail a traditional Chinese wooden sailing vessel, known as a junk, from Hong Kong to San Francisco.

Perched 600 feet above the Pacific, the three-bedroom home retains original details including a floating concrete staircase, polished stone floors, and a glass wall framing panoramic ocean views.

The Marriott family is one of America's richest families.

John Willard "J.W." Marriott and his wife Alice got their start opening a nine-stool A&W root beer stand in Washington, D.C. with $6,000 in 1927.

The family shifted to hotels in 1957, when they opened the world's largest motor hotel in Arlington, Virginia.

Today, Marriott International operates nearly 9,800 properties in 145 countries and territories across the globe under 30-plus names, including Westin, Sheraton, Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis.
