The second sewer scope this week that has shown potential problems for our clients. This appears to be a blockage in the main waste lateral. We had other concerns with this one including improperly sloped pipe in some sections allowing sludge and water to collect which may lead to a clog.

Thankfully, this potential new homeowner hired us to perform a sewer scope as part of their general home inspection. We noted a significant defect in the cast iron waste pipe at about 60 ft from the clean out. It appears that this connection is no longer sealed and the darker looking pipe has dropped anywhere from a half inch to an inch. The far end of this pipe also is dropped from its connection to the pipe that runs beyond that. This may be the municipalities problem to deal with but regardless, we were able to find it and give our client more information than any other inspection service in the area could do potentially saving them many thousands of dollars.

In the past 2 weeks I have had multiple homes where water tests came back positive for e coli or coliform bacteria. In at least two examples, the sellers were given information on how to sanitize or shock their well. In both of these instances, the sellers were provided information that was either incorrect or incomplete and that was unlikely to result in a good water test after the sanitization process. Sanitizing well is not particularly difficult but the steps should be followed very carefully to help ensure that a good water test can be received.
