Did you know that studies show your neighbors may have a bigger impact on your well-being than even your own family?
Research dating back to 1976 found that older adults who had strong relationships with their neighbors experienced lower levels of loneliness and worry — and higher feelings of usefulness and respect in their community.
Surprisingly, contact with family members had little impact on overall morale. What made the difference?
Frequent, voluntary connection with people nearby.
More recent studies confirm the same trend: adults who had little contact with neighbors — or whose neighborly connections declined over time — experienced increased feelings of sadness, restlessness, and hopelessness.
There’s something powerful about proximity. Neighbors share daily rhythms, common spaces, and small moments that build familiarity and trust. And when neighboring turns into friendship, the benefits multiply.
At Five Keys, we believe thriving communities start with connection. A simple hello. A shared conversation. Looking out for one another.
Because being a good neighbor isn’t just kind — it’s good for all of us.
