Frequently lately I have shown homes with DIY’d decks. There are so many ways this is obvious but sometimes it is more subtle. The most obvious problem here is that the cut planks are laid with the seams aligning on nearly every run. When you build a deck, you either stagger the planks or buy planks that run the length on a smaller deck. Also, please use treated wood meant for outdoor decks or composite deck material. Footers, footers are the key to longevity for a deck. Flashing, if you are attaching a deck to a home and don’t know what it is, either hire a pro or perform better research before starting. Install a sway brace if you have an elevated deck. So often a wobble deck is just in need of a sway brace. If you hired a contractor and any of this wasn’t in their quote, keep looking. First of all, ALWAYS hire out the texture. Unless you do it every day, I will always be able to tell. Second, do not, I repeat, DO NOT block out every tiny angle for every pipe and ventilation. If you really want a beautiful finish, move all of your plumbing, electrical, and HVAC lines to run together in parallel lines adjacent to structural supports. You’re welcome!
