In 1944 when Warner Bros was searching for a site for their film “Uncertain Glory,” Melrose Ranch in north San Diego became the first choice.

The film is set in France during World War II and follows the story of a convicted killer who escapes and, through a series of events, finds himself aiding his own captor in a scheme to rescue 100 hostages from their German captors. The plot follows the struggle of this unlikely hero while he faces love, freedom and his chance to create a new path to his life.

Melrose Ranch was already known as “one of the greatest showplaces in the entire west.” Part of beautiful grape country in Escondido, the lush vineyards provided the French countryside scenery for the film.

According to a Los Angeles Times news article released around this time, actors and other members of the film crew were asked to help harvest grapes by the local farm hands before filming could take place.
