Boating season is almost here and as the temperatures rise – it won’t be long until the lakes are filled with the sounds of summer!
If you need a refresher or are new to boating, here’s some key tips for checking over your boat to ensure you are ready to go – no mechanical experience required:
⛽: Check gas lines. Turn off the fuel valve, noting some newer engines may not need this. Inspect the lines for leaks, cracks, or any damage. If there’s any wear here, best to replace immediately. Check fittings and connections for the same, also ensuring they are tight and secured. Can clean the fuel tank for good measure.
⚙️ Check engine: Look for signs of wear or damage, refill all fluids and check over all cables. If possible, start/warm it up a bit – all working/sounding good?
💡: Inspect all electrical including wiring, lights, and battery connections. Replace any frayed or damaged wires and clean battery connections if needed. Finally, check that all lights working!
🛟: Is your safety equipment up to date and good condition? Different by state or province, make sure your boat meets all the necessary safety requirements around life jackets and equipment like first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and whistles.
Lots of great checklists online, don’t forget to check over your trailer and renew that boat insurance – have a great summer on the waters wherever you may be!
