A new chapter is underway at the former Memphis International Raceway in Millington, as the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) broke ground Wednesday afternoon on a $60 million redevelopment project.

The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) officially broke ground this week at Memphis International Raceway, launching a major redevelopment effort aimed at restoring one of drag racing’s most recognizable facilities and reestablishing it as a hub for racing, entertainment, and community events.

IHRA Divisional Director Staci Kettles noted that much of the existing infrastructure could not be salvaged. Years of vandalism and exposure to the elements have left many buildings beyond repair, particularly on the drag strip side of the property. Those structures are scheduled for demolition and will be replaced with all-new, modern facilities designed to support racing operations and fan experience.

The facility will host drag racing, stock car racing, bull riding, tractor pulls, and a variety of other events, while the planned amphitheater is expected to accommodate between 20,000 and 40,000 spectators.

IHRA leadership will be joined by local and state officials, along with community partners, today, Wednesday at 2:00 PM, to share details on planned facility upgrades, future events, and the significant economic and cultural impact the redevelopment is expected to bring to the Memphis region. DragCoverage presented by Laris Motorsports Insurance will be on site to cover the historic groundbreaking ceremony.

“This groundbreaking represents both respect for our history and confidence in what lies ahead,” said Leah Martin, President of IHRA. “Memphis International Raceway—formerly Memphis Motorsports Park—has played an important role in motorsports for decades. We’re proud to welcome the media as we officially begin restoring this facility into a vibrant, family-friendly destination for racing, entertainment, and community events.”
