Wow-When it rains...it pours. The rains we have been experiencing will have an effect on the exterior of your home It may not be for months or possibly years, depending on how vigilant you are in looking, before you become aware to the water damage being created now. Think for a minute- Days of constant rain coming down on a roof. If your home doesn't have gutters, and most don't for some reason in Georgia, all that water cascades off the roof and right to the base of the foundation. If this has been going on for some time, it will be noticeable at the entry doors. The brick mold will likely have become soft and rotted. The door may have begun to rot as well. All is not lost. Replacing brick mold is a relatively simple thing to do. PLEASE DO NOT scab another piece of wood brick mold, caulk and paint. That is a temporary fix at best. It also draws immediate attention of anyone looking at your home (think home buyer) You can purchase PVC brick mold at any of the big box stores. It comes primed and WILL NOT ROT. If you are not installing gutters, save yourself the "do over" in a couple of years by doing the job right the first time. If your entry door has begun to rot, like the one featured here, you can clean up the area, and apply car body compound (BONDO) sand and paint. This treatment will also create a water tight seal on that part of the door preventing the need to make a similar repair in the future.
