The historic Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago has a wonderful story that is about to reach its very last chapter.

If you walk into this beautiful building on Michigan Avenue today, you can step back in time. It is home to the very last public passenger elevators in the city that are run entirely by human hands.

This amazing story started all the way back in 1898. That was the year the building opened its doors as a special home for artists, musicians, and writers.

To help people get to their studios, the building installed beautiful Otis elevators. Unlike the modern elevators we use today, these did not have buttons to push.

Instead, they required a real person to stand inside, pull a heavy metal lever, and carefully line up the floor of the moving car with the floor of the building.

For over one hundred and twenty-five years, these friendly operators have greeted visitors, closed the metal gate by hand, and safely guided people up and down.

Sadly, this living piece of history is finally coming to an end. It has become too difficult to find the old parts needed to fix the machinery when it breaks.

There are also very few mechanics left who know how to work on such old systems. Because of this, the building managers had to make a tough choice.

They are starting a big project to turn the elevators into automatic ones. The human operators will keep running the levers through the end of 2026.

After that, the manual era will officially over. The story of these elevators reminds us how much the world changes around us.

For a little while longer, you can still experience a magical moment from the past right in the heart of the busy city.
