Avidor Evanston recently took a trip back in time during "New York Memories", a special NY-themed happy hour and photography exhibit featuring the remarkable work of the late Irving Kaufman, generously shared by his son, Avidorian, Phil.

Taken throughout New York City in the 1930s and 40s, Irving’s photographs capture everyday life, iconic streets, and unforgettable moments in history. More than 500 of his images have been published in the Brooklyn Eagle, allowing these incredible snapshots of the past to continue reaching new audiences today.

Phil lovingly restored and researched these photographs as his “COVID project.” While many of us were repainting living rooms or reorganizing closets, Phil spent countless hours sorting through thousands of negatives, selecting favorites, developing prints, and bringing his father’s work back to life for others to enjoy.

The exhibit was beautifully attended, and residents continued stopping by for weeks to admire the collection, share memories, and spark conversations. We’re continually inspired by the generosity within our community, residents so willingly sharing their time, talents, passions, and family stories with one another.

And while there may have been a little friendly rivalry between our resident New Yorkers and lifelong Chicagoans, everyone could agree these photographs were something special. 🗽

Who says dating stories get less interesting with age? 😄

Residents at Avidor Evanston were laughing nonstop during a recent book reading from Jo’s Journey, a hilarious and honest memoir by our very own Scarlet Jo Hanson. Her stories of post-divorce dating adventures brought plenty of belly laughs and unforgettable moments to the room.

Events like these remind us how much joy, humor, and connection thrive in our community. 📖✨ ❤️

On a blustery March day in Chicagoland, we reflect on a recent House Plant Swap at Avidor Evanston:

Neighbors, plants, and a whole lot of green joy 🌿

The Gardens in the Sky garden club gathered for a House Plant Swap to share tips, ideas, and of course… plant babies!

Ruby kicked things off with a great slideshow to get everyone inspired.
James shared helpful tips on growing beautiful orchids, while Kathy taught us how to keep violets happy and thriving.
Eileen filled the room with beautiful posters about native plants and the pollinators that depend on them.

Then the real fun began, neighbors brought plant babies to share! Aloe, pathos, ivy, spider plants, and more all found new homes around the building.

It’s amazing how a few plants can bring people together. We hope all the new green friends are happy and healthy in their new homes 🌱

We’re already looking forward to more plant-themed fun with the club this summer!
