A Home Is More Than a Pretty Purchase—it’s Part of Your Financial Portfolio

When buyers walk into a home with a beautifully updated kitchen, stylish bathrooms and perfect finishes, it is easy to fall in love. But good real estate decisions require looking beyond what is immediately appealing.

You don’t have to be wealthy, own stocks and bonds, or have multiple investment properties to build a financial portfolio. For many people, their primary residence is one of the largest and most important assets they will ever own.

That means buying a home should be both an emotional decision AND a financial one.

Before deciding what a property is worth, buyers should look at the overall market, the neighborhood, recent comparable sales, finished square footage and how the home’s price compares with similar properties nearby. An updated kitchen may be beautiful—but if the seller’s asking price includes far more than the actual value of that renovation, you could be overpaying without realizing it.
