Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, and odorless radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It enters buildings, especially in basements or lower levels, through foundation cracks and construction gaps. As the second leading cause of lung cancer, it is essential to test for, with mitigation (ventilation systems) recommended for levels at or above \(4\text{\ pCi/L}\). How Radon Gets into Homes and Buildings Entry Points: Radon seeps through cracks in foundations, construction joints, gaps around service pipes, and sump pumps.Pressure Differences: Soil gas is drawn into homes because they are often at lower pressure than the ground underneath.Building Materials: It can sometimes be released from building materials or, rarely, well water. Where Radon is Found Environmental Sources: Radon is produced by the decay of uranium in soil and rock.Locations: It is found in indoor air, particularly basements, cellars, and ground-floor rooms. It can also be found in groundwater.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and is found at elevated levels in one out of every two Colorado homes.
