We all have our own special way of interacting with our tiny visitors! I am definitely a mix of the conversationalist and the worrier. Which hummingbird personality are you?

It's tulip and pansies planting season!

Stink bugs turning up around your windows this fall? Try a simple indoor light trap for the ones that have already made it inside. 🍂

Add a shallow layer of water and a few drops of dish soap to a foil roasting pan. Place it in a dark room and aim a securely positioned lamp into the pan, keeping the lamp and cord dry and clear of the water. The light draws bugs toward the pan, where they can fall into the soapy water. Empty it and repeat as needed.

To reduce new arrivals, seal gaps around doors and windows and repair damaged screens. Avoid crushing stink bugs—the smell can linger!

Have you spotted these shield-shaped visitors at your house yet?

Please do not take all your feeders down just because it is fall! The late migrants heading south rely on that clear sugar water for survival.

The screwdriver test. Not just in summer months, but also in cooler periods as well, we can use a screwdriver to check your soils ability to absorb moisture. This can determine the need to aerate your lawn, especially appropriate at this time of the year!

On the old stump at the back of the yard, thin fans of fungus stack up in tiers, each one banded in rings of brown, gray, rust and cream, like the spread tail of a turkey.

That is turkey tail. Northern Woodlands magazine says you will almost always find it fruiting on dead wood, where it causes a white rot, and that fungi like it recycle the wood, making both nutrients and space available for trees and other organisms. Macalester College's Ordway field station notes that its enzymes decompose dead matter.

One honest caution from Northern Woodlands: it does sometimes invade the sapwood of stressed trees, so a living yard tree wearing turkey tail is worth a closer look. 🍂

Osmanthus is a wonderful, slow growing shrub or small tree that looks like holly, hence its nickname "false holly!" Major bonuses: fragrant fall blooms, tough and drought resistant and deer proof! What's not to love?
