Now that the summer's heat is full-force upon us, we know we aren't the only ones that want to stay cool but keep our pockets full! While having an air conditioner is amazing, electricity bills sky rocket during these summer months due to the constant battle between your unit and the outside temperature. Fortunately there are ways to keep your home cool while not breaking the bank. Here are some suggestions:

Keep the Hot Air Out!
*Seal cracks and openings to prevent warm air from leaking into your home.
*Add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks around leaky doors and windows.

Anything using electricity or gas is producing heat!
*On hot days, avoid using the oven; cook on the stove (yes, I realize it is still heat but produces much less output), use a microwave, or even better, grill outside.
*Install efficient lighting that runs cooler. Only about 10% to 15% of the electricity that incandescent lights consume results in light—the rest is turned into heat. An LED bulb puts out 3.4 btu's/hour of heat while incandescent puts out a whopping 85 btu's/hour!
*Take advantage of daylight instead of artificial lighting, but avoid direct sunlight since it produces large amounts of heat
*Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. Consider air drying both to cut down the heated dry portion of the cycle.

*Change the filters on your A/C unit. If it is struggling to pull air it is using more electricity!

*Keep your condensation lines clear, if they get blocked by debris or build up you can expect flooding to occur and no one wants to deal with a flooded home!

Below freezing temperatures can cause huge problems for homeowners!
These poor homeowners were out of town and did not even realize what had happened until they returned to this sight and a moldy and flooded home. This alone caused extensive damage resulting in over $15,000 worth of repairs. Repairs included pipe repair, water remediation, mold removal and treatment in addition to put back repairs including hardwoods on main floor, a good majority of the kitchen where water leaked from upstairs causing the ceiling to collapse and water to pour all over the kitchen cabinets and floor plus the damage caused upstairs.
