In 1986 I was going to purchase a home in Vacaville for $99,000 but ended up buying a new home for $116,000. The average wage in Solano County was $7.80/hrin 1986.
The average wage in Solano County for 2025 is about $35.00/hr (mainly because a lot of people in Solano County commute to the Bay Area to earn higher wages). That is about 4.5 times the 1986 average wages. Today that same home is valued at $594,000 or 5.12 times the cost of 1986.
I hear a lot of people say the American dream is unobtainable anymore and that the the gap between wages and homes have expanded to the point of not being able to afford a home anymore. As you can see home ownership in Solano County is not that far out of reach. It sounds like more people do not want to hustle. When I purchased my first home, I really had to hustle to make ends meet. While all my friends were purchasing cars, going on vacation, and living extravagantly, I had to buckle down to afford my home.
