I drew a hard line in the sand and told myself that if he ever put his hands on me again, it was over.
At the time, that boundary felt strong. Protective. Clear.

I even told people when they couldn’t believe we were still together, “He’s gotten a bit better. At least he doesn’t put his hands on me anymore.”
I believed that meant progress. I believed that meant safety.

But looking back, that way of thinking was unhealthy because I became locked onto only that line I drew. And in doing so, I stayed blind to the emotional and mental abuse I endured for years.

I minimized it. I rationalized it. I told myself it wasn’t that bad because it didn’t leave bruises. I measured improvement by what stopped instead of paying attention to what was still happening.

That’s why I’m speaking out now.

There is no hierarchy to abuse. Emotional, mental, verbal, financial, coercive. It all counts. Abuse is abuse. And the small things we are taught to excuse or explain away are often the very things that keep us stuck long enough for the damage to deepen.

Awareness matters. Listening to that quiet discomfort matters. Naming what doesn’t feel right matters.

Because recognizing the small stuff early can save you from the big stuff later on and from losing years of yourself in the process.

If this resonates, you are not weak. You are becoming aware. And that is where change begins.

Something I’ve learned about leaving unhealthy or abusive relationships:

When you finally set boundaries or walk away, the story often changes.
Not because the truth changed, but because control did.

A common response is a smear campaign—rewriting history to protect an ego, avoid accountability, or maintain a certain image. Suddenly, the person who endured the behavior becomes “the problem.” Rumors replace conversations. Accusations replace reflection.

It’s painful. It’s disorienting. And it’s incredibly unfair.

But here’s what matters:
People who truly know you don’t need convincing.
And people who believe false narratives without seeking truth were never safe places to begin with. 🙌🏼🤯

Healing often requires silence, not because the lies are true, but because your peace is worth more than correcting every version of a story you didn’t write.

If you’re going through this, please know:
You’re not crazy.
You’re not alone.
And your truth does not disappear just because someone else is uncomfortable with it.

I choose to move forward with integrity, clarity, and respect, for myself and others.
