“Solace”
Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana

The remains of an old cypress breach the surface of the muddy waters of Lake Dauterive on a super foggy morning.

For this image, I pulled my kayak right up to this old “stump” and used a wide angle lens to make it fill half of the frame. I decided to align the background grouping of cypress with the stump in order to provide a connection between the past and the present. The dense fog obscured the distant shoreline simplifying the composition and removing any distracting elements. I hope you like it!

“Envy”

Just before sunrise, two men venture out into the swamp for a morning of fishing.

Though I rarely capture images of people in the swamp, I always enjoy the results of photos with people recreating in this environment. The added sense of scale provided by having people in the photo really helps to bring greater context to the size of the trees and vastness of the area.

Before I took this image, I heard a boat firing up in the distance and decided to sit patiently in the kayak with the goal of framing them underneath the long extended branch of the once “iconic cypress tree.” Of the few images that I took, this one provided the best spacing between the boat and the surrounding trees. The light mist on the water and the warm light in the sky helped provide additional interest that pulled the final result together. I hope you like it!
