𝙈𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙤𝙣𝙚:

Colleen and I stop in at Point Clear’s Cozumel Mexican Grill for Friday date night dinner. We decide on the Fajitas Azteca for two ($37.99). Grilled chicken and steak are just part of the deal. The plate includes all the standard fajita plate trimmings like onions, bell peppers and tomatoes, but comes enhanced with bacon and grilled pineapple. We both agree: Delicious. And no shortchanging: You get a massive plate of food. The accompanying tortillas, rice and beans mean that you may have to be wheeled out of the place. Our cash total without tip lands at $41.56. Fernanda is our server and does a very good job for us. Definitely a satisfying meal, and one we’d go for again…

For a couple of years, we’ve hardly seen any visitors. We figured our cuisine wasn’t as good so they dropped us, opting to hit the places serving better food. Our spring is much the same. After a few weeks with no traffic, the feeder comes down. But come late August, the first of the southbound travelers show back up. The message coming through is clear: "Where’s our grub?” So, the feeder goes back up. And ever since, although the numbers aren’t as high as a few years ago, our back patio is frequently the scene of territory disputes and feeder drawdowns…

The annual Labor Day barbecue is a huge event at Fairhope Elks Lodge 1879. It’s also a delicious meal of barbecued chicken, rib and pork plates for eastern shore residents. Proceeds from sales help fund various Lodge projects serving the community. An undertaking of this size doesn’t happen without a lot of Elks members pulling together to do all the work, from preparing the food (starting a day in advance) to getting the facility in order, putting out signs, making up plates, processing payments and cleaning up afterward. The Elks hold barbecues that are open to the public on the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Aside from enjoying the meals, these are good opportunities to explore the Lodge and talk with members. Who knows, you might decide you want to join!

This behind-the-scenes footage is from one year ago when members of Fairhope Elks Lodge 1879 are busy preparing for their annual Labor Day barbecue, which is open to all. Elks members are at it again today, getting set for another major feast. The work starts 24 hours in advance and goes all night. For $18, you get a choice of three plates (chicken, ribs or pork, each with sides). Previous Elks barbecues have been a sell-out success. Proceeds from the sales support a variety of community service projects. Serving starts Monday at 10:30 at 561 S Mobile St. You can dine inside or pull around back to pick up from your car. Only thing we can’t tell you for sure is which plate to choose--that’s because they’re all good…
