𝘼 𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣:

Our Friday date night dinner stop at Thyme on Section winds up with a slight departure from what we order often. Colleen is planning for the regular grilled salmon, which she loves. But when Mary, our server, mentions the evening special--grilled tuna featuring a risotto of coconut and mango plus corn ($28)--Colleen says to bring it on. What shows up is a visual fiesta. But looks are only the start. Colleen says the dish is a treat, and she’d absolutely get it again.

Although typically addicted to Thyme’s Bistro steak, I ask Mary to bring out another favorite: The cashew chicken salad ($20), featuring a mix of greens, cabbage, carrots, red peppers, onions, sweet chili fried chicken, cashews and ginger-sesame dressing. With so many ingredients, digging through this salad is fun and delicious. Every bite is an adventure. My plate goes back empty.

As is SOP here, Mary does a great job taking care of us. What we’ve learned from dining here is that, while it’s fine to have your favorite entrees, it’s best to keep an open mind when hearing about the evening specials (they can be impressive). Thyme on Section is open WED-SAT for lunch and dinner and SUN ‘til 2 for brunch…

Allegiant Air flight 2634 passes over Fairhope’s Fruit and Nut District Monday afternoon while finishing a flight from Louisville. The Airbus A320 is captured about 4,850 feet up, slowing from a ground speed of 209 knots or 240 mph during the one hour twenty minute flight to Gulf Shores. Allegiant is in the process of expanding its network, having completed its acquisition of Sun Country Airlines MAY 13th. Strong turnout along with loads of fresh boiled crawfish and very cool cars highlight today’s Cars and Crawfish gathering at Fairhope’s VFW Post 5660. The cooking group Fat Boys Grilling does the food prep at no charge, as a means of supporting the Post in its mission of service to the community. Proceeds from crawfish sales go directly to help the post, according to Kerry Lambert, facility manager.

𝘽𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙀𝙡𝙠𝙨 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙡:

Fairhope’s Elks Lodge 1879 is a busy place on Memorial Day. The Lodge’s annual barbecue is no small venture with a handful of people showing up. Not when roughly 638 plates sell. That’s how many meals Lodge manager Karla Boyse tells me sold today--even in a pouring rain! “It’s currently the all time record,” she says.

Scores of Lodge members arrive early in the day to make the event the success it was. While cooking crew members arrive as early as 12:30am--more than half a dozen help with cooking and cutting alone--others gather needed supplies, set up tables, tents and payment systems and work to get the building ready and signage up. With so many people involved, you might think the scene would be chaos. But everyone knows what to do. The teamwork is amazing to watch. There’s no shortage of hungry customers, as people line up inside the building and outside to buy a meal (I watch as one person drives up in the rain and buys four plates).

Thanks to fellow Elks members for letting me roam around a busy kitchen scene with a camera to capture this year’s Memorial Day barbecue sale as it happens. Money raised from today’s sale goes back into the Lodge to help support projects designed to help veterans and others in need in our local community. You could certainly make the case that the community stepped up to the plate today, so to speak.

Which dish is most popular? At 234 plates, Karla tells me that ribs take top honors (no surprise there), followed by chicken and pulled pork.

Elks care. Established in 1868, the Elks is a private, benevolent organization whose members regularly launch projects to help people in need. The four cardinal virtues of the Elks are Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity. In addition to helping the community, Elks also have a lot of fun, by holding events like today’s Memorial Day barbecue.

Members of Fairhope’s Elks Lodge 1879 have been at it since 12:30a.m. Chicken, rib and pork plates with cole slaw and baked beans go on sale for $18 this morning as part of the Lodge’s annual Memorial Day fundraiser. Serving starts at 10:30, and lasts until the food is gone. The cooking crew tells me they’re selling 200 chicken halves, 42 pork butts and 100 slabs, the latter of which are notorious for meat so tender that it falls off the bone…

If you’re looking for some delicious food as Americans recognize Memorial Day, members of Fairhope Elks Lodge 1879 can help. The Lodge will be selling plates of chicken, ribs or pork along with cole slaw, baked beans and bread. Serving starts at 10:30 Monday and lasts until the last plate is sold. You can go inside the Lodge at 561 S Mobile St to pick up your meals, although a lot of folks like the convenience of never having to leave your car--just pull around back and members will be ready to help with your order. Proceeds from the sales help the Lodge maintain its mission of service to veterans and the community through a number of projects that take place throughout the year.

Also Monday, the VFW Post 5660 offers your choice of hamburgers with chips or hot dogs with chili and chips. Serving starts at 11 and lasts ‘til 1. The food is being prepared by the local cooking group Fat Boys Grilling. The Post is located at 950 Nichols Ave.
