Dryers are designed to move a large volume of air. When that airflow is restricted, performance drops quickly.
The number one cause of poor dryer performance is simple: lack of cleaning and routine maintenance.
Lint accumulates over time inside the dryer exhaust system. If it isn’t regularly cleaned, it restricts airflow, forces the dryer to run hotter and longer, and increases wear on internal components.
In this example, we also see an improperly terminated dryer vent. The exterior vent is screened instead of using a baffle (damper-style) hood. Screens trap lint at the termination point, accelerating buildup and compounding the airflow restriction.
Why this matters:
• Longer dry times
• Higher energy use
• Added strain on the dryer
• Increased fire risk from lint accumulation
Proper dryer vents should terminate with a baffle-style hood, which opens during operation to allow lint and moist air to exit freely, then closes when the dryer is off to help limit pests and weather intrusion.
Practical maintenance tips:
• Clean the lint trap every load
• Inspect the exterior vent annually
• Avoid screened dryer vent covers
• Schedule professional dryer vent cleaning if dry times increase
Professional dryer vent cleaning typically costs $100–$200, and can significantly improve performance, while helping extend the life of the appliance.
Small detail. Big impact.
