Private equity is moving beyond buying brokerages, focusing on the "lifetime value" of the homeowner by capturing the data from inspection reports, such as the age of roofs, HVAC systems, and other maintenance issues. These private equity investment companies own the software and can sell your home's data to 3rd parties. This is prompting concerns from inspectors that inspection report data is being shared with insurance companies and contractors to be used for marketing and risk assessment. It could even be shared with your lender prior to close and could affect whether the loan is approved. Three steps to protect your data: Ask your inspector about their data storage policies. Review the privacy policy of the software app used to send your report. Locate independent inspectors who don't use large, aggregated platforms.
