This Thursday, May 28th through Sunday, May 31st, from 11am to 11pm the Rochester Greek festival brings you the tastes, sounds, and traditions of Greece on the grounds of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 962 East Avenue, near the George Eastman House. They will be serving your favorite Greek pita sandwiches like Gyro, Souvlaki and Loukaniko. Try homemade Spanakopita, Greek Chicken, Pastichio, Moussaka, and Lamb Shank dinners. Enjoy the latest appetizer additions of Saganaki (flaming cheese) and delicious fried kalamari. There are also Greek treats such as Loukoumades, available only during Greek Festival, and of course Baklava. You can also enjoy your dessert with a custom ordered cup of Greek coffee at the Kafeneo. Visit the Taverna to enjoy a bottle of imported Greek beer, or a glass of Greek wine. Don’t forget to stroll through the Agora to experience shopping in a Greek marketplace. This Saturday, May 16th at 10:00 am, join certified bike instructor Jesse Peers on a George Eastman Bike Tour. The tour takes you to ten different locations related to the life and work of George Eastman's popular photography. See buildings and sites that shaped this famous Rochestarian's life, or were in turn shaped by him. Jesse Peers will guide participants on the relaxed pace, 6.5‑mile tour. At each of the ten stops, Jesse will share insights into Eastman’s life and work. The tour begins and ends at the Eastman Museum. There is limited space available so advance registration required. To participate, every rider will need to sign a waiver before the tour begins and must bring a helmet and tuned-up bike. Tickets are $25 for members of the George Eastman Museum, $35 for non-members, and can be purchased here: https://www.eastman.org/event/tours-special-events-member-events/george-eastman-bike-tour-1 In the event of passing rain, the ride will be delayed. This celebration is a community-focused event aimed to celebrate the beauty, history, and environmental significance of the Daffodil plantings within the cemetery. There will be tours starting at 10 am followed by various talks by Daffodil experts, and live music beginning at 1:00 pm. This event will honor all the work that has been done in the 8 years since The Daffodil Project first started. See over 100,000 Daffodil blooms in all their splendor. This Friday, April 17th, Saturday, April 18th and Sunday, April 19th, the Genesee Region Orchid Society will be hosting their 50th Annual Orchid Show and Sale in The Rochester Museum of Science, Eisenhart Auditorium. The three day event will include viewing, shopping and learning about Orchids. Over a half dozen vendors selling Orchids, supplies and even jewelry made with real orchids including Bergen Water Gardens, Windswept in time, Oakwood Orchids, J&L Orchids, Flask & Flora, and more will be on site. Arouse your senses by viewing and smelling exhibits of magnificent blooming orchids by vendors, local members and surrounding organizations. You can even bring in your pot bound orchids and have them repotted by experts for a small fee. The show begins on Friday at 1:00 pm through 5:00 pm, Saturday’s hours are 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday begins at 10:00 am with the event closing at 4:00 pm. Entrance fees are $10 for adults, $5 for students with ID, and children under 12 are free. Various orchid talks take place throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. This Saturday, April 11th, from 10:00 am - 4:30 pm, the Genesee Valley Woodcarvers are hosting their 40th Annual Show and Competition at the Rochester Museum and Science Center in the Eisenhart Auditorium. This is a chance to see a world class show in Rochester, NY. Club members have won awards at the Ward World Wildfowl Carving and Caricature Carvers of America Championships as well as other national shows. The show features birds, fish, caricatures, youth carvings, demonstrations, and more. Of special interest is the soap carving kits for youth (no charge) available while supplies last. We offer something for all ages with carvings of all shapes and sizes. There’s something to please everyone. A raffle will be held for carvings and carving related items and there is no need to be present to win. Admission is free for all. The Rochester Museum and Science Center is located at 657 East Avenue, Rochester 14626.
