Existing home sales rose 1.2% in October from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.10 million units, the National Association of Realtors said Thursday.

Sales climbed 1.7% compared with October last year. The latest sales figure topped the roughly 4.09 million pace economists were expecting, according to FactSet.

Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes increased last month to the fastest pace since February as lower mortgage rates helped pull more homebuyers into the market.

The project involved a full remodel of the kitchen, family room, sun porch and a few adjacent areas. Using Houzz Pro, Bula combined the existing family room and sun porch, added a new fireplace and built-ins, opened a wall between the new family room and kitchen and reworked the spaces connecting the kitchen and garage. Nearly one in five American homes listed for sale reportedly saw a price cut in September, as rising inventory shifted more power to buyers.

The number of listings with price cuts reached 19.9%, unchanged from August but up modestly from last year. Homes priced between $350,000 and $500,000 saw the steepest markdowns at 21.6%, while luxury properties over $1 million were less likely to see reductions, at just 13.3%, according to a Thursday report from Realtor.com.

Home price reductions reached 19.9% of listings in September, with Denver, Portland and Indianapolis leading major metros in seller markdowns.
