Notice to “ALL Property Owners”. Senator Hallstrom introduced LB 1067 during the current legislative session. The intend of this bill is to increase the documentary stamp tax by $1.00, increasing the documentary stamp tax to $3.32 per $1,000 of value. This tax is charged on every real estate transaction in Nebraska. The current rate is $2.32 per $1,000. This is a 43% tax increase and will be charged on all sold property. This tax is typically paid by the seller of real estate.
The increase of $1.00 will allocate $.50 to Rural Workforce Housing Investment Fund and $.50 to Middle Income Workforce Housing Investment Fund. These funds are used by communities to develop housing projects. I don’t have a problem with the Funds and their intended use but I think it’s unfortunate this bill is not mentioned and is coming up for final reading without property owners being aware of a new tax assessed against their asset. Especially a 40% increase. You can reach out to your Senator or research the bill on your own.
