Pre-qualification is usually a quick, early estimate based on the information you share (income, debts, savings). It’s a helpful starting point to get a general sense of what might be comfortable.

Pre-approval goes a step further: the lender reviews documentation (like pay stubs, bank statements, credit, etc.) to give a more accurate number and clearer loan terms. That’s why pre-approval typically strengthens your position when you’re ready to make an offer.
