While both are important steps in the mortgage process, a Pre-Qualification and a Pre-Approval are not the same thing.

The key difference between a pre-qualification and a pre-approval is the level of scrutiny your financial information receives. Pre-qualification is based on the information you provide via a phone call or online while a pre-approval involves a more thorough review of your financial history.

Another difference is the level of certainty that a pre-approval provides. A pre-approval letter is a strong indication that you will be approved for the loan, and also lets the sellers and their agent know you are serious about buying a home and can afford the home you want to look at.
