How much snow does it take for your roof to collapse? There's no set answer to that as it varies from house to house based on several factors. Listen to Lars Knobloch speak about this with the KFGO Morning Crew this morning (Link in the comment section).

As a general rule of thumb, a well built roof structure should be able to handle 20 pounds of snow per square foot (PSF) which means you might be in the danger zone when the snow load is closer to 25 PSF or more.
Dry fluffy snow is lighter than wet snow, old compacted snow is heavier than wet snow, and ice is considered heaviest.
4' of light fluffy snow might weigh 20 PSF while 10-12" of wet, heavy snow might weigh 20-25 PSF.

Our conclusion: If you end up with 10-12" of really wet snow on your roof you should consider removing it. If you already have 6" of old, compacted snow, you might want to remove it all when you have an additional 6-8" wet snow.

Here's another couple of reminders:
1. Don’t forget to remove snow from your deck as the snow load may cause your deck to settle or collapse.
2. Remember to check your gas meter and remove any snow/ice around it. Failure to do this may result in obstructed gas flow, gas leaks and even explosion.
3. Remove snow from your furnace exhaust and intake pipe to prevent your furnace from shutting down and carbon monoxide from entering your home.

Effective immediately, City of Moorhead residents should stop putting glass into blue recycling bins.

Why the change? According to Minnkota Recycling – which handles the City of Moorhead’s recycling after it is collected – glass has become too expensive to recycle, creates safety issues in the recycling process, and contaminates the recycling stream.

There are two options for residents:
1. Take glass to glass-only dumpsters (Woodlawn Point, 418 Elm St; Public Works Shop, 700 15 Ave N; or the Resource Recovery Center, 3322 15 Ave N)
2. Put it in the regular gray trash bin.

Thank you for helping keep glass out of the recycling stream!
