Slow down and pay attention everyone! ❤️
BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY MESSAGE FROM SHERIFF JEFF CRITES
As the school bells ring and our children head back to class, I want to take a moment to remind everyone in St. Francois County to prioritize safety on the roads, in our neighborhoods, and within our schools.
To Our Parents and Guardians: Please talk with your children about safe practices whether they’re walking, biking, riding the bus, or driving to school. Make sure they know to:
• Use crosswalks and sidewalks.
• Avoid distractions like phones while walking or biking.
• Wear helmets when riding bikes.
• Stay alert and aware of their surroundings.
To Our Drivers: School zones are active again. That means:
• Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
• Stop for school buses with flashing red lights; it’s not just courteous, it’s the law.
• Watch for children crossing streets, especially near schools and bus stops.
• Avoid distractions; texting and driving don’t mix.
To Our Students: Your safety matters. Whether you're walking, riding, or driving:
• Be visible - wear bright clothing or reflective gear.
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing streets.
• Stay seated and quiet on the bus so the driver can focus.
• Report anything that makes you feel unsafe to a trusted adult.
Safety starts with awareness Parents and students are encouraged to use the Courage2ReportMO program to confidentially report any safety concerns. It’s a powerful tool to keep our schools safe and secure.
Let’s work together to make this school year safe, successful, and full of learning. Our deputies will be out in full force, especially around school zones, to ensure everyone gets where they’re going safely.
From all of us at the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, stay safe and take care!
Sheriff Jeffrey S. Crites
