On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people were free. That day became known as Juneteenth and has been celebrated for generations as a day of freedom, reflection, resilience, and hope.
