13 Days of Holiday Home Security
Keeping your home safe is an all the time thing, but how do you it when you are away during the holidays? Here are a few tips to make your home less appealing to would be thieves.
Day 1. Put a sign for a security company in your yard.
• A security company sign can work as a visual deterrent and make bandits look elsewhere.
Day 2. Don’t broadcast your trip.
• Keep your trip to yourself and off of Social Media till you get back. A not so great friend of your friend might want to make your stuff into their stuff while you are away.
Day 3. Use light timers.
• Set light timers to turn on and off lights at certain times that mimic someone being home. Use them on your outside lights as well so that even while you are away, everyone can enjoy your display.
Day 4. Install cameras.
• There are all kinds of smart cameras that you can add to the outside of your home. They work as a visual deterrent for would be thieves and send alerts straight to your phone.
Day 5. Never Hide A Key!
• A hidden key can be found. If someone is going over to let your dog out or water your plants, give them a key to use while you are away. Better yet, there are programmable doorknobs that will let you assign temporary access to people if need be.
Day 6. Keep windows covered.
• Not only will if help keep the heat in and save money on your utility bill, covering your windows keeps prying eyes from looking at your stuff.
Day 7. Basement windows too.

Day 8. Have newspaper and mail held while you are away.
• Even if you do everything else on this list, if you have a pile of newspapers on your porch or a stack of mail in your mailbox, people are going to know you aren’t home.
Day 9. Keep vegetation short and well groomed.
• Not only does well kempt foliage add to the curb appeal of your home, it also gives ne’er do wells no place to hide.
Day 10. Remove garage door release cable.
• A garage door release cable is accessible from the outside, and then, so can everything in your garage.
Day 11. Install heavy-duty strike plate.
• A heavy-duty strike plate coupled with 2-inch wood screws in the door hardware makes your front door exponentially harder to kick in.
Day 12. Ensure Deadbolt seats correctly.
• How can the deadbolt do its job if it is not correctly engaged? Give the door a wiggle when turning the lock to make sure that it seats properly. Don’t let operator error be the reason the burglars won.
Day 13. Replace standard screws in doors for 2-inch wood screws.
• The hardware that comes with your door is short, like REALLY short and extremely lacking. Using 2-inch wood or deck screws attaches the strike plate and hinges to the studs under the door frame. The 2x4 stud and the door frame together is stronger than the doorframe by itself.
