An expired ID can completely derail a closing at the notary table. During a recent transaction, a senior client arrived with a license that had been expired for several years, which normally would have paused the entire deal for an emergency trip to the licensing office. Fortunately, our team happened to have deep, verifiable community connections to the client's family, allowing us to legally verify their identity as witnesses and still close on time.
While small-town magic saved the day this time, it's a critical reminder to always audit your clients' identification at the very start of a transaction to ensure everything is current.
