The One Thing That Helped Me Make Friends
-
Most people hear that I lived in 6 different states before I turned 14 and the first guess is always "Army Brat?".
-
Although my parents aren't in the armed forces, I definitely had my moments of being a brat. Especially when it came time to pick up and move again.
-
Starting over was never a fun experience and often led to lonely moments. New addresses, new phone numbers, and of course making new friends.
-
Sometimes it was easy because we moved into a neighborhood with lots of kids. Other times we lived out in the boonies with only one other family within walking distance.
-
As with anything, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. And we did do it a lot. New houses, new schools, new neighborhoods.
-
Even today with new jobs, new groups of people, and even trying out new places to eat. I find that you can make new friends and make a great first impression at any opportunity.
-
My wife hates it because I have never met a stranger and I'm proud of that. The world is strange enough, we don't need to help it along.
-
Besides, we all have had moments of nervousness when we try something new. Not knowing what do to, what to say, or who is a safe option that wonβt reject you outright.
-
The funny part is most people would love for you to make the first move. Say hi, smile, or even wave. But make sure they know you are waving at them, not someone behind them. πππ
-
The quickest way to have a warm welcome is to extend one to someone else. I love how easy it is to make someone smile by simply smiling at them first.
-
Worst case, you keep on walking and probably never see them again. Best case, it doesn't cost you anything but can give you such an energy boost.
-
Plus, you give someone the warm and fuzzy feeling of human connection. You never know who is new and could use a friendly smile.
