Outdoor outlets need to be a weather resistant GFCI and protected by a weatherproof cover. Since outdoor outlets are exposed to the elements, covers protect them from damage. The national electrical code requires you to cover outdoor or other wet location receptacles anytime they are in use to ensure the safety of anyone who may come in contact with them.

Remember that just because it used to be ok and acceptable, doesn’t mean that unsafe practices inside a home should ever be overlooked. Things like this, that we now know are terribly unsafe, were once widely accepted in everyday practice. Our inspections are meant to first and foremost identify things that may hurt the people inside or around your home.

Common hazards include overloaded electrical outlets, arcing, and extension cords and cause about 45,000 home structure fires per year.

It’s not everyday we get to do a commercial remodel inspection and eat lunch in the same place. Check out the Culver's in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. They clearly have pride in their product. Good service and a beautifully remodeled building.

Smoking in a home will abnormally discolor everything, including your smoke detector, however even in a smoke free home, you may have a yellowed or discolored smoke detector. Yellowing or discoloring is also a sign of age. When you see this, it’s definitely time to replace your smoke detectors (as they should be replaced at least every 10 years).

It was our privilege to help the home owners replace the smoke detectors in this City of Festus home.

Remember:

1. Smoke detectors should be placed in each sleeping room, in the hallway outside the sleeping rooms and on each level.

2. Smoke detectors should never be painted or covered.

3. Batteries should be replaced twice a year, but at least once a year.

4. Smoke detectors should be tested monthly.

5. If you have fuel burning appliances, a fireplace, or an attached garage, the centrally located detectors should also detect Carbon Monoxide.
