One of the most common questions I get this time of year is whether winter is a bad time to buy or sell a home.

The answer usually starts with a conversation, not a yes or no.

I’ve worked with buyers who preferred winter because fewer showings meant less competition and more intentional decisions. I’ve also seen homes perform well in colder months because winter reveals how a home actually functions — from heating to insulation to natural light.

✔️ Clear outdoor furnace and dryer vents — snow or ice buildup can restrict airflow
✔️ Open cabinets under sinks on exterior walls to help protect pipes during extreme cold
✔️ Be mindful of roof edges and drainage paths where melting snow or ice can refreeze
✔️ Park vehicles away from rooflines where snow or ice may slide
✔️ Know where your main water shutoff is before you need it

These small steps can help prevent some of the most common winter-related issues.
