U.S. Treasuries are extending their rally this morning following weaker-than-expected U.S. economic data, which has reinforced expectations for multiple Fed rate cuts this year. Consumer spending was also revised lower, the weakest pace since Q2 2020, signaling growing pressure on households. The financial markets are now pricing in faster and deeper interest rate cuts beginning as early as September. GREAT NEWS FOR HOME BUYERS: the inventory of homes for sale is now the highest in 5 years. Price growth has slowed making it a good time to buy a home. Interest rates are expected to drop as the year marches on.....need a pre-approval to buy?

The much anticipated employment report whiffs! The Change in nonfarm payrolls came in at just 142k, well under the consensus estimate of 165k. NFP also received downward revisions to last month’s report, revising down July gains to just 89k vs the 114k previously reported. Private Payrolls missed as well, coming in at 118k versus 140k estimate. Manufacturing job growth dipped further in to negative territory losing -24k jobs vs the estimate of -2k. The headline unemployment rate remained the same at 4.2%, while avg hourly earnings rose to .4% MoM vs the estimate of .3%. Overall, a big miss that confirms growing weakness in the labor market and suggests the Fed is behind the curve. The yield on the 10yr note is in a bit of a freefall here, currently at 3.68%. Fed Futures haven’t changed much, but we believe a 50bps cut this month is in play – perhaps the markets need a little more time to digest this morning’s data….J. Collette, Capital Markets ….Another interesting stat, the labor “participation rate” is lower than pre-covid.

8/23/2024 Fed Chair remarks on interest rates: “The time has come for policy to adjust. The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks.” “We will do everything we can to support a strong labor market as we make further progress toward price stability.” The dovish flip is complete. Fed Chief Jerome Powell’s comments from Jackson Hole earlier, confirming the Fed is full go on a September rate cut. It appears this week’s BLS revision to nonfarm payrolls, a revision that removed 818,000 previously reported job gains (nearly 30%), was the iceberg that finally sunk the USS Transitory. Markets are reacting as expected with treasury yields falling hard and equity markets rallying across the globe.- J. Collett, Capital Markets
