Prayers to those affected by the flood!
If Your Home Was Affected by Flooding in Indiana, Start Here:
If you or someone you know has experienced flooding, don’t assume you’re on your own—or that you have to figure everything out at once. There may be several options available depending on your insurance, location, and the extent of the damage.
Here’s what to do first:
1. Document EVERYTHING
Before cleaning up or throwing anything away, take photos and videos of:
• Water levels and where the water entered
• Walls, floors, ceilings and foundation
• Furniture, appliances and personal belongings
• Any structural damage
• Exterior damage
Keep receipts for cleanup, temporary housing, repairs and damaged items.
2. Contact your insurance company ASAP
Even if you aren’t sure what’s covered, file a claim and ask exactly what your policy covers.
***Important: Standard homeowners insurance typically does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is generally a separate policy. (IN.gov)
3. Report the damage to Indiana 211
Indiana 211 is collecting damage reports for affected areas. Reporting your damage helps local and state officials understand the scope of the disaster and determine what assistance may become available.
📞 Call 211 or 866-211-9966. (Indiana Government)
4. Check FEMA assistance
If your area receives a qualifying federal disaster declaration, homeowners and renters may be eligible for assistance for things such as temporary housing, certain home repairs and other disaster-related expenses that aren’t covered by insurance.
FEMA assistance is not automatic, so check your eligibility and apply if your area qualifies. (Indiana Government)
5. Check Indiana’s State Disaster Relief Fund
Indiana may also provide assistance to eligible homeowners who are uninsured or underinsured, depending on the specific disaster and affected jurisdiction. (Indiana Government)
6. If the damage is significant, understand ALL of your options
Depending on the situation, you may be looking at:
•Repairing and restoring the home
•Making the home more flood-resistant
•Using insurance/FEMA/state assistance toward recovery
•Selling the property in its current condition
•Selling after repairs
•Exploring other disaster or mitigation programs
And please don’t rush into a decision while you’re overwhelmed. Stay safe out there!❤️
