Parents in Flagler County: if you’re planning a summer swim, whether it’s at Flagler Beach, the Intracoastal, or at the pool, please make swim safety part of the plan.

Drowning can happen fast and it can be quiet. The CDC says it’s the leading cause of death for kids ages 1–4, and the U.S. sees about 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths a year (about 11 a day). The Red Cross reports that for children under 5, 87% of drowning fatalities happen in home pools or hot tubs.

The best protection is an adult’s sober supervision any time little ones are in or near water. If you’re the one watching, put the phone down and stay close enough to react immediately.

In open water, around docks, boat ramps, and shorelines, have kids wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Currents, drop-offs, and sudden changes in depth can surprise even strong swimmers. Inflatable arm floaties and pool toys are not safety gear.

If you have a pool at home, use barriers that keep kids from getting to the water without you knowing. A fence that fully separates the pool from the house, with a self-closing/self-latching gate, can save a life. Pool cover’s present a significant drowning risk and should only be used when a fence is in place.

Swim lessons are a great layer of protection too, but no lesson drown-proofs a child. Keep watch, every time.
