Some of the best beach traditions begin with nothing more than a slow walk and a curious eye.
Sharks constantly shed and replace their teeth. Over long periods, some teeth fossilize in offshore deposits, and wave action and shifting sand can wash tiny black or gray fossils onto Flagler Beach’s cinnamon-coquina sand. When the tide is low (especially after a storm or after the shoreline has shifted) walk the wet-sand edge and look among shells and coquina fragments. A kitchen strainer, colander, or small sifting scoop can help, along with a bag or jar for your finds.
There are no guarantees, which is part of the charm. It’s a screen-free, old-school treasure hunt for all ages: no rush, no schedule, just heads down and eyes on the sand during a quiet early-morning or late-afternoon beach walk.
