BIA Keams Canyon HAMP Project, Hopi Reservation

This project was an excellent example of Arizona Surveying's ability to think outside the box and provide the client with a mapping solution that saved time and reduced cost.

One of the project's tasks was to establish right of way location for the approximately 12-mile-long portion of the Hopi Arsenic Mitigation Project (HAMP) regional water system that runs along SR264 on the Hopi Reservation. Establishing the ROW required analyzing a combination of existing survey monument locations and the actual physical location of the roadway as defined by edge of pavement. Arizona Surveying knew that a topographic survey utilizing aerial LiDAR mapping would also be performed for waterline design by another firm along the 12-mile-long section. So rather than duplicate edge of pavement locations, Arizona Surveying simply requested CAD linework delineating edge of pavement from the aforementioned aerial LiDAR mapping to supplement its own survey data.

Using edge of pavement data from another survey undoubtedly avoided a mapping redundancy which allowed Arizona Surveying to reduce it's project scope and fee saving the client tens of thousands of dollars.

Arizona Surveying provided survey control, construction staking and as-built services for the new $6 million North Country HealthCare facility in Williams, AZ. North Country HealthCare is the primary community health center in the area serving a critical need for comprehensive, one-stop healthcare including urgent care. The project continued Arizona Surveying's tradition of applying it's land surveying services and expertise to infrastructure and facility projects that are vital to the needs of Arizona's citizens.

We're based in Flagstaff but like our name implies, we serve the entire state of Arizona. For this project we provided survey control to support LiDAR mapping of a 100+ mile section of a 161 KV transmission line between Parker, AZ and Yuma, AZ. Most of the powerline access traversed rugged desert terrain.

Arizona Surveying recovered three existing NGS control points to use as a foundation for the survey. Found and set control points were occupied with GPS base receivers and post-processed using the NGS’s Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) for positional verification or establishment as applicable. The result was a non-accumulative accuracy of within 0.11’ in a mile (1:50,000). This was greater than the effective relative accuracy of the LiDAR mapping. Job well done!

Museum Fire BAER Road Protection Implementation

2019's Museum Fire burned 1961 acres of timber on the steep slopes of Flagstaff's Mt. Elden. Due to anticipated risk to the Forest and public (including the potential for severe flooding and debris flows in Flagstaff), a BAER (Burned Area Emergency Response) team was assembled after the fire to identify risk and make recommendations to mitigate.

Part of the team's recommendations included installing a total of five Cable Woven Articulating Concrete Block (ACB) water crossing structures at critical drainage crossings located on Forest System Road (FSR) 557 (Elden Lookout Rd). These structures will provide road embankment protection during rainstorm and debris flow events predicted to be higher than historical intensity and volume due to post-wildfire watershed behavior.

Arizona Surveying was commissioned to utilize laser scanning and GPS to provide survey control and collect topographic field data which helped engineers with design/placement/sizing of the ACB system.

Thank you John Luckow, you saved my life!!!

Four years ago I had a decision to make: find a way to keep working or go on permanent disability. I was barely 50 years old and Parkinson's Disease was advancing rapidly.
