Clearing options: Mulch, cut, chip, remove...which to choose?
Clearing land for a build site, to put in a road, to restore views or alongside driveways, fences or ponds all have several options.
1) Mulch in place: Our excavator can reach the mulching head about 20' up or out and can take care of trees and brush up to about 6" in diameter. This is a one-step process that results in "shredded" material being left on the ground at the site of the work. The potential downside is the roots are still under the ground and the shredded material is left on the ground. This is many times the go-to solution for pond banks, fence lines, horse/ATV/hiking trials, the sides of driveways and for thinning out thick woods.
2) Brush cutter: Our brush cutter can take down up to 6" trees as well but shines on grass, briars, and brush up to a few inches in diameter. The upside is this is possibly the fastest way to get material cut down and on the ground. The downside is the material is then full size on the ground and many times has to be raked up or otherwise relocated. The roots are also left underground which can result in quick regrowth.
3) Pull up or push over: If the tree or shrub needs to be gone including the roots then pushing it over or pulling it up with the grapple is generally the best option. Once out of the ground all but the roots themselves can be processed (up to 15" in diameter) through the chipper resulting in fine wood chips that can be reused elsewhere onsite or relocated.
4) Large trees: Large trees they can be cut and the logs can be hauled off or left for firewood and the brush/limbs can be chipped. Stumps can be left in the ground or removed and hauled off as well. For some locations burning onsite is an option as well.
