LINT-- Homeowners in Flint can now take advantage of a new program to help pay for certain renovations or repair work on their homes.
During a regular City Council meeting, held virtually on Monday night, Mayor Sheldon Neeley told members and residents that a total of $1 million is available for distribution on a first-come, first-served basis. Qualifying applicants can receive up to $20,000 for their projects through the Flint Home Improvement Fund.
"They can use these funds for front porches, roof repairs, decks," said Neeley. Roofing and siding project are also among qualifying projects. "There are no income barriers," Neeley added. "The only mandate that we have is that they own their home and they must reside inside of the home."

In partnership with various organizations, the city will provide loans, that depending on the applicant's circumstances, could be low-interest, no-interest or forgivable.
Genesee County Habitat for Humanity will manage the fund. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation provided a $661,878 grant to support no-interest home repair loans for low-income Flint residents and support Habitat's program management. The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) also contributed $500,000 to the fund. Other partners include the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, Genesee County Land Bank Authority, Huntington National Bank and the Neighborhood Engagement Hub.
"This is a wonderful opportunity and if this works well, we will continue to try to support these activities to help these homeowners improve the quality of their life by improving the quality of your home," said Neeley.
Council members support the program with some asking if they could get assistance. The mayor and his team said, "yes." Everyone can qualify, according to Neeley.
