Why Older Homes Take More Time to Inspect
I recently inspected a home built in 1954, and it’s a good example of why older homes require a more detailed evaluation.
Over the years, homes from this era often have a mix of original components and updated systems. During this inspection, we identified:
• Roof near end of service life
• Suspected asbestos siding
• Double-tapped breakers
• Open-ground exterior outlets
• Active plumbing leak
• Crawlspace moisture and missing v***r barrier
• No GFCI protection in kitchen and bath areas
It’s important to understand that GFCI outlets were not required when this home was built. However, modern safety standards now recommend them in areas where water is present.
Homes built before 1978 may also contain lead-based paint, which is something to consider during renovations.
Older homes are not bad homes. Many are solid and well-built. They just require a thorough inspection to understand their condition and plan for maintenance.
If you're considering purchasing an older home in the Florence area, make sure you allow time for a complete evaluation.
