Below is the latest update on the status of the laundry rooms.
Here is some information that the memorandum does not mentione: The Dept. of Buildings began this crackdown in 2020, just months before lockdown orders began. Once the lockdown began, the DOB ceased almost all activities, slowing down all buildings (not just The Park Regent Condominium's) ability to conform to the rules. See this article about how other buildings are facing the same problem: https://www.habitatmag.com/Publication-Content/Building-Operations/2020/2020-January/City-Cracking-Down-on-Illegal-Laundry-Rooms
Furthermore, the DOB did not always find these laundry rooms to be illegal. See the this quote from the article:
“He (the inspector) didn’t see any sprinklers in the laundry room,” says Isaac Katz, head of management at A.M. Katz, which manages the 236-unit co-op that was built in the late 1920s. “He checked his device and didn’t see a laundry room on the building’s Certificate of Occupancy. I explained to him that we got the same violation in 2015, and the judge ruled in favor of the co-op, saying we were grand-fathered because we’ve had a laundry room since 1931.”
Similarly, The Park Regent Condo never had problems with the laundry room prior to it being closed down in 2020. In a surprise move, the DOB shut down our laundry room with no chance to conform to the new enforcement requirements. This was a perfect storm for apartment dwellers all across the city, but especially resident of the Park Rent Condo as some nearby laundromats closed down.
Please know that this is the TOP LINE PRIORITY for the condo board and is the FIRST ISSUE we discuss during every board meeting.
