Fun Fact Friday About Fall

🍁Name origins: Americans usually say "fall," while British people say "autumn". Both words started in the 16th century. Before that, the season was simply called "harvest".

🍂Leaves do not actually turn colors. Yellow and orange pigments are inside leaves all year, but green chlorophyll hides them. Trees stop making chlorophyll as sunlight decreases, letting the bright colors show.

🥜Animal brains grow: Animals like black-capped chickadees and squirrels hide seeds in hundreds of spots for winter. Their brain memory centers grow larger to help them remember where the food is hidden.

🦋Long migration: Monarch butterflies fly up to 3,000 miles from the United States and Canada to Mexico during autumn.

🎃Pumpkin fruits: Pumpkins are actually fruits and belong to the gourd family. They are made of about 90% water.

Mortgage Rates Little-Changed to Start New Week

It was a fairly uneventful day for mortgage rates to start the new week. The underlying bond market was slightly stronger. This suggests slightly lower interest rates. The average mortgage lender lowered top-tier 30yr fixed rates by 0.01% compared to Friday.

Underlying motivation for the bond market can mostly be attributed to lower oil prices, which have been a common source of intraday inspiration for better or worse.

With today's drop, the average lender remains right in line with the rates they offered before last week's Fed rate hike.

Fun Fact Friday - Fall Equinox Edition

🍁The Science of the Equinox ~It’s a Moment, Not a Day: The equinox doesn't last all 24 hours. It is the exact astronomical millisecond when the sun crosses the celestial equator—an imaginary line in the sky directly above Earth's equator. In 2026, this happens precisely at 5:05 p.m. Folsom time.

🌅"Equal" Day and Night is a Myth: The word equinox comes from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), but we don't actually get a perfect 12/12 split. Because Earth's atmosphere bends sunlight, the sun appears above the horizon for a few minutes before it actually rises and after it sets. Most places experience about 8 to 16 extra minutes of daylight on the equinox.

🧭True East and West: The equinox is the only time of year when the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on Earth (except at the poles). It is the perfect day to calibrate a compass or find your bearings.

🌌 Nature & Global Phenomena

🌾Persephone's Descent: In Greek mythology, the autumn equinox marks the exact day the goddess Persephone says goodbye and returns to the underworld for six months. Her departure causes the earth to turn cold and crops to go dormant until spring.

Mortgage Rates Held Fairly Steady Until Late in The Day

Looked at in a vacuum, and up until the last few hours of the day, Friday was no better or worse than the average day over the past several months. Compared to yesterday morning's levels, the average lender was 0.01% higher--a small enough move to be effectively considered "unchanged." This expanded to 0.05% in the last few hours as multiple lenders increased rates.

In terms of big-picture benchmarks, the increase officially brings rates to their highest levels since early 2025. To be clear, we were just barely lower than May 2025 levels yesterday. Now we're in line February 2025 levels.

The intraday market movement was interesting. The bond market (which underlies mortgage rate movement) actually improved this morning even though Fed rate hike expectations increased following a slightly hotter inflation reading in this morning's economic data.

At the very least, we can say that today's high stakes inflation data didn't end up doing too much incremental harm to the rate outlook. Next week's Fed announcement (and the associated market reaction) will tell us a lot more about the road ahead for rates.

Today, we pause to honor and remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001. Though years have passed, the weight of that day and the memories of the mothers, fathers, children, siblings, and friends who never came home remain close to our hearts.

We also remember the incredible courage of the first responders and everyday citizens who risked everything to help complete strangers. Their selflessness reminds us of the profound strength found in unity and human kindness.
