The Fed lowers key interest rate by .25% as inflation eases, but pace of cuts may slow:

The Federal Reserve announced today the second straight rate cut amid inflation and a move set to further cut borrowing costs for millions of Americans.

The Fed likely made a modest interest rate cut in anticipation of President Elect Donald Trump's upcoming administration. Trump's tax, trade and immigration policies are expected to partly reignite inflation, which has pulled back substantially since 2022.

The Fed has also indicated in September that inflation has made progress toward the targeted 2% goal, however remains "attentive to the risks to both sides of its dual mandate," meaning that softening job market growth also could prompt a larger rate decreases.

What is the Fed interest rate now?

Thursday's widely expected decision leaves the Fed's benchmark short-term rate at a range of 4.5% to 4.75%, down from a 23-year high of 5.25% to 5.5% just a couple of months ago. The move is poised to further push down rates for credit cards, some mortgages & auto rates and other loans while also trimming bank saving account yields that had finally gotten more generous after years of minimal returns.

This is the perfect time to purchase a home as interest rates are trending downward and the holidays will be a distraction to many home buyers. Once the new year commences buyer competition is expected to increase significantly, which will lead to higher home prices in the future. As mortgage rates decrease, demand for homes increase, thereby increasing the cost of homes as well.
