Public safety announcement:

I should be flattered that so many people have been calling and texting me for my opinion as a subject matter expert on whether or not to cover their heat pump during the storm.

I would recommend the following:
1) turn your thermostat to the emergency heat mode
2) cover your outdoor unit with a sturdy tarp
3) once the storm is done, take the tarp off your outdoor unit
4) turn your thermostat back to normal heat mode.

A couple of important notes. It is extremely important that you DO NOT turn your thermostat to the emergency heat mode 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗽. Part of the normal function of the normal heat mode is to defrost your outdoor unit. However, during extreme storms it is hard for this defrost cycle to keep up. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗽, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺.
