Key Steps for Successful Seed Starting!

Preparation: Use a sterile, fine-textured seed-starting mix (not heavy garden soil) and pre-moisten it to the consistency of a wrung-out sponge.

Planting: Fill containers, sow 2-3 seeds per cell to ensure germination, and label them. A general rule is to cover seeds with soil to a depth twice their width.

Germination (Warmth & Moisture): Cover trays with a plastic dome or bag to maintain humidity. Use a seed-starting heat mat to maintain a warm 70–80°F, which encourages faster, more even sprouting.

Light: Immediately upon germination, remove the cover and provide bright, direct light (14–16 hours daily) using grow lights to prevent weak, “leggy” seedlings.
Watering: Use bottom watering (placing trays in a shallow pan of water) to prevent washing out seeds or damaging tender seedlings.

Thinning & Transplanting: Once seedlings have their first true leaves, thin them to one plant per cell.

Hardening Off: About 2 weeks before planting outdoors, move seedlings outside for increasing amounts of time daily to acclimate them to sun, wind, and temperature changes.
